THE IMPORTANCE OF GAMES AND RECREATION
In this day and age , most of us know the benefits of keeping fit through games and recreation. Modern society has come to the point that we need to keep fit to stay alive. Our work normally do not involve hard physical labour. So many of us lack exercise. The consequence of not getting enough exercise is frightening. On the mildest scale we may simply grow fat. On a ominous scale, we may develop all sorts of ailments that can kill us before we grow old.
Ladies and gentlemen,
The words exercise, games and recreation are interrelated. Webster’s Dictionary defines exercise as bodily activity for the sake of health. According to American Heritage Dictionary, games is an activity providing entertainment or amusement, a pastime. Where as recreation could simply means the expenditure of time in a manner designed for therapeautic refreshment of one’s body or mind.
As people in the world’s wealthier regions lead increasingly sedentary lifestyles, the need for recreation has increased. Research shown that recreation contributes to life satisfaction, quality of life, health and wellness and that the use of recreation as a diversion may have clinical applications to individuals with chronic pains or other health impairments.
Recreation is essential to the longevity of human beings, especially because it helps counteract stress. According to research cited in Time Magazine, stress is the major factor in many of the leading causes of death in United States. Researchers and findings have shown that recreational activities have wealth or mental benefits and help in the development of psychological and social tendencies of individuals. It could be passive or active or a combination of the two. In passive activities , the individual has less of a role to play in the process of recreation but rather engages in it partially without any stress. Examples of passive recreation include enjoying a song, watching aerobics, watching a football match in a stadium or reading. This form of recreation rejuvenates and relieves tension. Examples of active recreation include playing ping pong, bicycling, running, brisk walking and playing basketball with friends and relatives.
In recent years more “exciting” forms of recreation have received more attention in the public eyes, such as, skydiving, hang gliding, paint ball, rock climbing, mountaineering, caving and many others.
Ladies and gentlemen,
There are many benefits that can be derived from active recreational activities, as it makes an individual less prone to obesity and also excellent for elevating heart rate. It also helps to boost the immune systems and increases positive moods. Recreation and leisure activities can help alleviate depression while rest, relaxation and revitalization through recreation are essential in managing stress in today’s busy and demanding world. As a saying goes, “ From the bitterness of disease, man learns the sweetness of health “ – Catalan proverb.
Ladies and gentlemen,
Many people in today’s society are health conscious. Regular physical activity can help the body maintain, repair and improve itself. Coronary heart disease is one of the leading problems in the country. If brisk walking, running, cycling or swimming is done, it will ultimately increase muscle strength of the heart. As person gets older the bones begin to get weaker and this leads to osteoporosis. Regular exercise can keep the bone strong. Remember, “ Those who think they have no time for bodily exercise will sooner or later have to find time for illness” – Edward Stanley.
Ladies and gentlemen,
With age our bones lose density and our muscles start to weaken. Walking is a proven method for boosting strengths. Walking, especially at a brisk paces can also help control and in some cases reverse the effects of aging on bones and muscles. Brisk walking gets your heart pumping and sends oxygen through your whole body. Its strengthening your heart and the muscles groups responsible for movement. Walking is good for your bones and joints too.
Walking for fitness can help you achieve a number of important health benefits. For examples, you can, reduce the risk of heart attack, managed your blood pressure, reduce your risk of developing type 2 diabetes, manage your weight, manage stress and boost your spirits and most of all, stay strong and active.
Ladies and gentlemen,
Without doubt, aerobics are particularly helpful for weight control. Research consistently shows that regular physical activity, combined with healthy eating habits is the most efficient and healthful ways to control your weight. Whether you are trying to lose weight or maintain it, you should understand the important role of physical activity and include it in your lifestyles. As old adage says, “ If you don’t take care of yourself, the undertaker will overtake that responsibility for you “ – Carrie Latet.
Ladies and gentlemen,
“ Teach your sons the art of swimming, sharp shooting and horseback riding “ said Umar, the second Caliph ( successor to Muhammad, peace be upon him) who ruled from 634 to 644 bc. Why were these ‘sports’ so important to young Muslims men in medieval times? It was because sports helped to prepare them to do well in other areas of life, such as, war, leadership and business. There are many popular sports for rich and poor alike. Many spots were contests, like racing and wrestling. Even games like chess were contests that helped train one’s mind for war and competition.
Ladies and gentlemen,
Health is more important than wealth. A certain fact is that we cannot buy health with money. Today, there are still some diseases which have no cure. Wealth doesn’t always make life more healthy and happily. If you’re billionaire you always feel unsafe. Afraid of being killed or kidnapped or your fortune will speedily harm your health and shorten your longevity. Furthermore, without being fit, how can you enjoy your wealth. If a man have wealth, he can have everything, but where there is health, there is life.
Ladies and gentlemen,
Whatever means we employ to keep fit is up to us. In fact we have the choice whether we want to keep it or leave our bodies alone. The benefi of keeping fit are many, provided we do not do it to extremes. There are cases of people over-exerting themselves to death. That defeats the whole purpose of keeping fit. Performed moderately exercise do keep us fit and healthy. We do not have to kill ourselves doing it. Neither do we have to get killed for lack of doing it.
